Wastewater is the term used to describe the disposed water and solids from communities, industries, and manufacturing facilities that flows into receiving wastewater treatment plants or waterways. The treatment of wastewater discharges are for reuse or compliant disposal to the receiving environment. The world has grown, as have the compliance requirement for discharge wastewater.  Today, it is required to know what constituents are in the wastewater prior to entry to the waterways or wastewater treatment plants. Implementing a wastewater treatment system to remove the five parameters listed below is extremely important in order to keep your business leading the way environmentally for customers, employees, host communities and shareholders.

Five Important Parameters and Characteristics that Make Up Wastewater:

Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) – This parameter is the amount of dissolved oxygen that is needed by aerobic organisms to break down organic matter present in the wastewater. BOD5 is a 5-day test measuring the dissolved oxygen used by microorganisms in the biochemical oxidation of organic matter. The results are used to determine how to size the treatment system and measure the efficiency and compliance of treatment processes.

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) – This is a measure of organic and inorganic matter in the wastewater and natural waters. It is also used to measure the organic and inorganic matter in industrial and municipal wastes that contain compounds that may be toxic to biological life. COD is also used to determine how to size the treatment system and measure the effciency and compliance of treatment processes. 

Total Suspended Solids (TSS) – Total Suspended Solids are the solids in the water that can be trapped and will not pass through a filter. The suspended solids are contained in industrial wastes and municipal sewage. High amounts of TSS containing bacteria, nutrients, and pesticides can cause many problems for the aquatic life when entering the waterways. Additionally, high TSS can put your business out of compliance with federal, state or local regulations. 

TKN & TN – TKN Stands for the Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen. In wastewater, it is comprised of organic and ammonia nitrogen. TN stands for the Total Nitrogen. In wastewater, this is comprised of organic nitrogen, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Meeting TKN & TN as well as Phosphorus requirements have become a priority in recent years for discharge waters.

FOG – FOG stands for fats, oils and grease. Fats and oils are the third major component of food and beverage plants. Grease is a term that is used to describe the fats, oils, waxes, and other related substances in the wastewater. FOG substances float on the surface of the wastewater and interfere with biological treatment and cause maintenance problems during the treatment process.
