Chemical and petrochemical facilities face unique challenges with wastewater treatment. With the influent flowing from various parts of the process facility, and despite efforts to segregate streams, these wastewater treatment facilities periodically face toxic shock loads.

The typically high COD loads in these plants require biological treatment. The traditional approach has been to allow extended treatment times in an effort to provide sufficient residence time for compounds to break down and be biologically metabolized.
